2010-2011

  • We have initiated and strengthened the Observer Corps, monitoring both local and state meetings--- a benefit of being in the capitol. Reports are published on our web site and available to the public.

  • The Voter Service Committee continued its poll watching project--reporting to the Election Commission on problems encountered during early and election day voting.

  • We have held informal coffees with legislators--Speaker of the House Beth Harwell, Sen. Douglas Henry and Sen. Jack Johnson--to get to know them a little better, hear their views and present League priorities.

  • Our Third Thursday `hot topics monthly meetings have included educational presentations on hydraulic fracturing method of natural gas removal, health care reform as it effects TN with focus on `exchanges', redistricting, changes in education standards in light of the Race to the Top grant, and legislative prognosis vis a vis League priorities.

  • We have assessed proposed voting machines for the disabled, needed when changeover to paper ballot begins, for best overall voter access.

  • We have participated in a workshop presented by the Disability Law and Advocacy Center focusing on disabled voters awareness of their rights and ability to vote freely

  • We are participating in the LWVUS sponsored Membership Recruitment Initiative--seven LWVN members attended the LWVTN training in Crossville last fall.

  • We participated in the Nashville ATHENA leadership award--a nominee for young professional (Mary Beth Ikard) and for traditional women (Carol Westlake) who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or professional roles as well as the provision of valuable service to others in the community and serve as role models to other women.

  • And, moving ourselves toward the 21st century, we added the online secure credit option for dues, functions, and donations on our web site to accommodate the many who only do their financials online.
